I need y'all to know that this is so accurate it’s very nearly not funny
Fun bit of trivia, all licensed pharmacists are licensed to provide pharmaceutical care for all animals including humans!
Isn’t there something weird with DEA licenses and controlled substances though? There’s only one pharmacist at the hospital who can dispense opioids for mice, so we can only go certain days when she has her regularly scheduled shift. Of course, while our meds are vet-approved they aren’t prescribed. We’re under the DEA registration of an administrator and it all gets quite messy, especially since we do our own diluting/compounding in house for research, so while we get it from her, all of our diluting and administering and record keeping has to be impeccable.
Honestly it varies by state. I’m very proud of your records!
Also: Because it used to be more common for vets to do all of their own dispensing in house, there was some kind of loophole that allowed them to skip the DEA registration, and so the idea of the DEA being involved in their practice is new to some veterinarians.
Speaking as a human hospital pharmacist who has never practiced in the vet world but who tries to vaguely keep up on the hot goss.
