Do you know what I am not over? That Julian’s genetic engineering included improvements to his height and weight. Even if his parents were, as claimed, trying to cure a learning disability, why mess around with his physical appearance? Because their perfect child had to be attractive too? It’s so messed up, and that’s the kind of thing that would also really damage a person’s psyche. No wonder he’s so upset about aging, if he thinks that he literally only has value in other people’s eyes as long as he can be considered handsome.

There’s a lot to unpack here too in how this ties into his interactions with women and how much of his early “oh please oh please go out with me” behavior is him seeking affirmation of his “value” by confirming that people do find him attractive.
