Pottermore - Inside Hogwarts

I may have my problems with Pottermore, but the art is just stunning.

When I used to think about Voldemort’s horcruxes I imagined a soul divided in equal portions residing in the different horcruxes and Voldemort himself. I realised that this can’t be true in The Half-Blood Prince Slughorn describes making a horcrux as splitting ones soul in two. This means that when Riddle made his Diary into a horcrux he split his soul in half and physically removed one half from his body and placed it in the diary. This means that he only had half of his soul left when he made his next horcrux, Marvolo’s ring. This half would have been split in half leaving only a quarter in Voldemort’s body. This goes on and on the amount of soul remaining in Voldemort halving each time he makes a horcrux until he had only 1/128 or 0.78125% left in his body.  As shown in the graph above.  So next time you wonder why Voldemort could have done some of things he did, remember how little human he had left in him. I don’t know about you but I think that this is crazy.

Come on guys, I didn’t do maths for 14 notes

So are you telling me that Harry had more Voldemort than Voldemort had Voldemort?

Also, Harry is approximately 102% human.

(Addressing what I bolded)

Because only literally soulless people commit murder and genocide or start bigoted uprisings with the intention of grabbing political power as a result. It’s not like that shit is happening right now.

Like, nice graft and all, but can we stop with the perpetuation of the idea that people only do evil fucking things in extreme, largely fictional circumstances? Can we stop romanticizing villains, real or fictional, as always having an excuse for their actions? Fictionally, it’s honestly lazy writing only done to dodge admitting that “inhumanity” is not inhuman. In reality, it fucking shits on everyone that has to live their lives dealing with actual horrible people.

Sorry but every single piece of fiction where soul magic is intrinsic (see Buffy the Vampire Slayer) fucks this up badly and never addresses it, and it drives me up the wall. Actual real humans with whole fucking souls murder, torture, assault, and oppress other real humans every day, everywhere. The soul is not where morality sits, and immorality is a conscious decision; acting against public good and public decency isn’t a fucking accident of circumstance.

/rant

I think this is important to note. In defence of this particular story device however, it is the behaviour that causes damage to his soul, not the damaged soul that permits the behaviour.

Nice graph, interesting criticism. There is a mention in The Half-Blood Prince that the reason why you need to kill someone to create a horcrux is because murder rips your soul. Murder - the most evil act - is part of the magic of making a horcrux, and is, as said above, what causes the damage to his soul. Riddle does tons of evil things before making even his first horcrux, and it’s not like he’s alone in committing horrific crimes either.

Oh, know the perils, read the signs,
the warning history shows,
for our Hogwarts is in danger
from external, deadly foes

And we must unite inside her
or we’ll crumble from within
I have told you, I have warned you…
let the Sorting now begin.

[suspicious snape voice] “you’re saying your friend named remus lupin definitely isn’t a werewolf”

[shocked, disappointed james potter voice] “remus lupin, a werewolf?? is it because he’s named after a guy raised by a wolf? is it because his surname literally means wolf? well. you’re wrong. his middle name is john, there’s no way he could be a werewolf.”

a scene that really bothers me in HBP is when Ginny feeds Harry that pie thing and she is like “don’t you trust me?” and then just feeds it to him all nicely

because I honestly believe that book!Ginny would have said “don’t you trust me?” and then she would proceed to shove the pie in his face and then say “your mistake!” and just like run away laughing her head off and Harry would just be sitting there with pie stuck to his face and a small grin thinking ‘wow this girl is perfect’

can we just take a moment to imagine little cute nine-year-old hermione reading matilda

and peering into this book about a smart, bookish girl who could move things with her mind

and then can you imagine her concentrating very hard on the books on the bookshelf and slowly, slowly, getting them to move
