My favourite bit of Doctor Bashir, I Presume is the moment just when Richard Bashir first speaks. You can see the dread on Julian’s face.
See, Julian’s accent sounds very posh. Richard’s, however, is a working-class London accent. Suddenly, Julian’s accent seems like something he has consciously chosen, not the one he spoke originally. Even if nothing had come out about the augmentation, the image Julian has built up of his background and origins is shattered. It’s such a small moment, and it would have been so easy for them to tell the actor ‘just do a generic British accent’, but instead they added another aspect to the conflict, as well as some nice foreshadowing.
