If the marquis were good anarchists they’d be either trying to contact/help the Cardassian dissidents or on bejor distributing free food or something but noooo they gotta be all angsty and dramatic in their ugly ass outfits
I think this could be a really interesting jumping-off point for a fic. Perhaps there is an internal struggle about this very question. One side wants to fight against the Cardassian state specifically, and want to aid the Cardassian dissident movement, while the other is staunchly anti-Cardassian and think of the dissident movement as either a joke or just as bad as the current regime.
I think the Maquis are really interesting because if you look at what started the movement, it’s that settlers didn’t want to have to give up their land. That’s it. That’s the whole philosophical principle. It does get bigger than that, but it boils down to basically: “This is my land, and I am annoyed that the government ceded it without my consent, and that they trust the Cardassians.”
And that attracted people with wide ranging political views, from fuck Cardassia to fuck the Federation to fuck both of them, but I don’t know if any of them really constitute an anarchist philosophy so much as “these governments specifically I don’t like”.
I definitely think there are anarchist elements within the Maquis, but it’s not the prevailing ideology. They seem to implement a lot of direct decision-making, but at the same time, a lot of them are Starfleet officers, particularly people in leadership positions. Really, they don’t have a prevailing ideology at all, just a goal. I guess that leads to the question how centrally organised the Maquis actually are. Maybe this is actually a number of different movements under the same umbrella. There might be people whom Starfleet think of as the Maquis, but who have as much beef with Eddington and co as with the Cardassians.
